1. This story begins with a mood that is very different from the mood at the end of the story. How are these two moods different? What specific words show a change in mood?

2. In the second paragraph of the story, the children are gathering stones, seemingly just for fun. The end of the reading shows why they were actually gathering stones. What is the literary device that describes this?

3. What does it say about the culture of this village that the lottery was conducted in the same manner as "the square dances, the teen club, and the Halloween program."

4. The tone of the lottery is very anxious. What specific words does the author use to show this feeling of worry?

5. On the bottom of page 4, Mr. Adams states that in a neighboring village they don't even have a lottery. Old Man Warner responds that those villagers are a "pack of crazy fools". Why is this ironic?

6. Why do you think the village has a lottery? Is it a good or a bad thing?

7. Do you think it was right for the youth in this story to have been forced to participate in the event?

1. Why has Jackson chosen common people for her characters? Could she have chosen characters from other levels of sophistication with the same effect? What is the irony of the

tone of this story?

2. What seems to have been the original purpose of the lottery? What do people believe about it?

3. Is it important that the original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost? What do you suppose the original ceremony was like? Why have some of the villages given up this practice? Why hasn't this one?

4. What aspect of the lottery does Tessie challenge; what aspect goes unquestioned?

5. This is a different sort of story when you read it for the second time. What elements (such as Mrs. Hutchinson's attempt to have her daughter, Eva, draw with the family) might take on a different meaning the second time through?

6. Some critics insist that the story has an added symbolic meaning. Do you agree? If so, what is Shirley Jackson trying to tell us about ourselves?  (Hint: Consider that this story was written during the height of the rise of Communism and the Soviet Union.)

7. Is the lottery a collective act of murder? Is it morally right? Is tradition a good reason for such actions? How would you respond to cultures that are different from ours that perform "strange" rituals?

8. Describe the point of view of the story. How does the point of view affect what we know about the situation? How does it preserve the story's suspense?

1. Taxes: Who will pay to help run your country? Rich people? Poor people? Everyone the same amount?
2. If you are looking for ideas, you could discuss some issues that many political parties like to talk about, such as:

• Garbage disposal
• Traffic problems 
• Free education or private education? 
• Free university?
• Cost of public transit?
• How much money will you spend on the military? (right wing positions tend to spend more on military, left wing spend less, with the exception of communism)
•  Housing? Will there be support housing for people with less money?
• Jails - how severely should we punish convicted criminals? Is Jail meant for rehabilitation and recovery? Or should jail be used to keep criminals out of society?

It's important to remember that over the next two weeks, your level will be measured based on a lot of information. No single writing sample will decide your level next year. The ELL department will look at each student's work carefully.

Today we'll be working on our current events! I'll be doing a short demonstration today of a current event, then you'll be working on your own article. Please use your current events handout and answer the questions on it for your article. This is what you'll be using to present your current event to the class.

ELL 3 Social Studies
We need our devices today. Grab your device, load up Scholantis, and check your mark for the presentation. Then, answer these questions using a lightning response. I'll show you how to do this during class.

1. When you designed your project, what steps did you take to create the final product?
2. How did you decide what information you would put in and what information you would leave out?
3. What is the difference between an image that would work for your presentation compared to an image that wouldn’t work?
4. What worked well for your project?
5. What will you do differently next time?
6. When you made your presentation, did you create a nice balance of text and visuals? Too much text?

First, we'll update our food tables to show a complete week (Monday to Friday). We should have a total calorie count for each day, and total calories used for each day. For this assignment, we need to know those numbers.

1. Take your calories used and your total calories. Calculate your net gain or net loss of calories. Calculate the number like this: (calories you ate) - (calories you used) = net calories
2. If the number is positive, that means you're gaining weight, if the number is negative it means you're losing weight. Do you need to make a change? Where should you make this change? Which meal might need a change? 
3. Next, check the food you're eating. Which food group do you eat the most? Which food group do you eat the least?
4. Based on this answer, are there nutrients that you're missing in your diet?

Now that you have done some thinking about your health and your diet, it's time to make the assignment. Find a partner. On the portal (portal.sd38.bc.ca) create a video in your portfolio where you'll answer the questions above, and...

1. Give an overall rating of your diet. You could give it a score out of 10. 
2. Why did you give it this rating.
3. Make a few goals (2-3) that describe how you will make improvements to your diet and health.

Answer all 7 questions above in the video. The whole video might be 1-5 minutes long.

Here is the paragraph we made in class together:

Before there was life on Earth, there was a place called Skyland in the clouds, and the Earth was all water. In Skyland, Ancient Chief’s wife, Sky Woman, had a dream that the great tree was uprooted. Since it was a strong dream, Ancient Chief decided her dream must become true. As Sky Woman fell in the hole left by the Great Tree, she grabbed a handful of seeds then was caught by two swans who carried her down. Sky Woman couldn’t live on a planet made of water, so the animals wanted to find a way to help her. Many animals tried to bring the Earth up from deep within the ocean, but only the Muskrat was able to swim to great depths and bring some of the Earth up. They placed the Muskrat and the Earth on the Turtle’s back, where the turtle’s shell became scratched, and the Earth could grow. Sky Woman was brought to the Earth on the Turtle’s back so she could live, and life on Earth began.

Okay - time for some mythology! What we're going to do has quite a few steps, but we'll be fine. Myths are cultural stories that attempt to explain something that we didn't understand a long time ago. Here's our plan:

3. Check the same story on (p. 49). Make a summary as a class. Maximum - 8 sentences.

Pretty soon, all of Karen’s friends were sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends with Karen, but after lunch that day, it seemed like all sorts of people were happy to be my friend. You cannot convince me that Karen did not know what she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a great deal about what it means to be a true leader.

The last two paragraphs of the article says that "Chinese New Year is not a religious holiday anymore." Now it's just a vacation for people to "go online, sleep, or watch TV." It also states that younger people don't like "old New Years foods."

Have you felt that traditional holidays are losing their original purpose? Are they becoming "just a break from work and school"?

The boring way: "I agree/disagree with the idea that..."

• dogs are great.
• pets are too much work.
• homework is fun.
• movies are better than books.

The interesting way: declare your position as part of your topic sentence, rather than simply agree or disagree with it. For example:

• I agree with the idea that dogs are great. (boring)
• Dogs have been loyal and wonderful pets to people for many years. (interesting)

The 2nd sentence here shows the reader that you agree with the statement and it also provides information to support your position.

Today we completed a handout during class that helped us learn the names of each province and territory in Canada. Near the end of the class, we started making a map of Canada. Please don't do this map for homework - we'll do this in class so I can make sure you're doing it correctly each step of the way. Here are the steps that we covered in class:

It's Reading Day! So what's reading day?

First of all, we have extended reading time. This means we read for up to 25 minutes. Then it's time to hand in our sharkbucks and earn stamps for reading.

During silent reading, we can fill in our book report form or read. Do this after each book we finish. After we finish silent reading, we'll hand them in and earn stamps on our Reading Day sheet. We can get stamps on Reading Day for the following activities:

Some animals become extinct when people hunt too many of them, some animals become extinct because there are other, stronger animals which eat or kill them.

Welcome back to the new year! It's time to wrap up our work as the semester comes to a close. That means lots of writing!

I know we've been away for a month, so we'll go over the big parts of the paragraph again before we start. Check it out:

1. Topic sentence. What will you write about in your paragraph?
2. Body sentences (3 - 6 sentences). 
3. Concluding sentence. There are many ways to do this, think about these questions. You only would answer one of them:
1. What is your overall feeling about this topic?
2. What big message should we remember about this topic?
3. Why was it important to write about this topic?

If you're feeling brave, you can also write many paragraphs.

In Canada many people like to make New Year's Resolutions. These are goals that we work on for the year. Here's an example of a New Year's Resolution:

(Check the underlined section - this is how to use a semi-colon. Two sentences that are very similar can have a semi-colon. You don't have to make a semi-colon in level 1 or 2, but you can if you like!)

     This year, I will drive less, and take the bus more. Driving cars makes a lot of pollution and people don't get exercise in their cars; if I take the bus, I can help the environment. As long as I leave a little earlier, I can get to school on time. Also, I can meet interesting people on the bus, like other students who take the bus to school. I think all people should do something good for the world, and this is my way to do a good thing.
