We went over p. 126 in class in addition to project time. Yes, I forgot to hand out sharkbucks but I've made a list of those who have earned them. I will hand them out at the beginning of next class.

We did a lot of grammar today! Units 15, 16, 17, and 18 all in one package. This means we are finished with the perfect tense.

We're finishing up questions from "Thank you Ma'am," and going over integrated vs segregated quotes. Here's our working sample for today:

       Last year was the first time I had ever been the new kid at school. For the first four days, I was completely alone. I don’t think I even spoke to a single person. Finally, at lunch on the fifth day, Karen Watson walked past her usual table and sat down right next to me. Even though I was new, I had already figured out who Karen Watson was. She was popular. Pretty soon, all of Karen’s friends were sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends with Karen, but after lunch that day, it seemed like all sorts of people were happy to be my friend. You cannot convince me that Karen did not know what she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a great deal about what it means to be a true leader.

4. What was the last dish for the Chinese New Year dinner? Why?
5. Why was Chinese New Year not allowed anymore? Why did it return?

The last two paragraphs of the article says that "Chinese New Year is not a religious holiday anymore." Now it's just a vacation for people to "go online, sleep, or watch TV." It also states that younger people don't like "old New Years foods." 

Do you agree with these last two paragraphs?

Have you felt that traditional holidays are losing their original purpose? Are they becoming "just a break from work and school"?

We're going to pick our champion topic today. This is one that has passed our first line of testing - where we pair up and challenge our big supporting points with one another. Then we'll write our paragraph.

If we have time, here is our NEWSELA article. Set the reading level to "590L" before you start! Remember - this article uses Fahrenheit, not Celsius to measure temperature. In Fahrenheit, water freezes at 32 degrees.

Today we finished up The Golden Crane, and worked on Agree/Disagree writing.

The boring way: "I agree/disagree with the idea that..."

• dogs are great.
• pets are too much work.
• homework is fun.
• movies are better than books.

The interesting way: declare your position as part of your topic sentence, rather than simply agree or disagree with it. For example:

• I agree with the idea that dogs are great. (boring)
• Dogs have been loyal and wonderful pets to people for many years. (interesting)

The 2nd sentence here shows the reader that you agree with the statement and it also provides information to support your position.

Another wonderful day - and some great participation. Social Studies classes have been working very hard on designing their maps, and I have seen some amazing work coming through today. Here's a rundown of what we've done:

ELL 1/2 Social Studies
Maps have made some progress today. Remember - Canada is not an island! Please don't put an ocean where a country should be. No homework today. Tomorrow we may have some time to finish, and we'll do some grammar!

Today we completed a handout during class that helped us learn the names of each province and territory in Canada. Near the end of the class, we started making a map of Canada. Please don't do this map for homework - we'll do this in class so I can make sure you're doing it correctly each step of the way. Here are the steps that we covered in class:

1. Draw a compass rose.
2. Colour the lakes, rivers, and oceans blue. Please remember: Canada is not an island.
3. Label (use capital letters for each of these):
1. Provinces
2. Territories
3. Captial Cities
4. Great Lakes and Oceans
4. Colour the provinces and territories. Don't use blue. Please colour darkly and neatly.

It's Reading Day! So what's reading day?

First of all, we have extended reading time. This means we read for up to 25 minutes. Then it's time to hand in our sharkbucks and earn stamps for reading.

During silent reading, we can fill in our book report form or read. Do this after each book we finish. After we finish silent reading, we'll hand them in and earn stamps on our Reading Day sheet. We can get stamps on Reading Day for the following activities:

1. Reading Silently During the Week and RD. (1 stamp)
2. Fill in the Reading Log for the week. (1 stamp)
3. Completing a Book Report form. (2 stamps)

Welcome to semester 2!

For starters, we're going to go over our course outline and learn a few things about the routines and rules of our class.

Read this article about an endangered species. An endangered species is for things that live in the world - we use this word when they might all die. Some animals become extinct when people hunt too many of them, some animals become extinct because there are other, stronger animals which eat or kill them.

After you read, think about this question:

How much should people spend in time and money to help endangered species? Should people even bother?

Welcome back to the new year! It's time to wrap up our work as the semester comes to a close. That means lots of writing!

I know we've been away for a month, so we'll go over the big parts of the paragraph again before we start. Check it out:

1. Topic sentence. What will you write about in your paragraph?
2. Body sentences (3 - 6 sentences). 
3. Concluding sentence. There are many ways to do this, think about these questions. You only would answer one of them:
1. What is your overall feeling about this topic?
2. What big message should we remember about this topic?
3. Why was it important to write about this topic?

If you're feeling brave, you can also write many paragraphs.

In Canada many people like to make New Year's Resolutions. These are goals that we work on for the year. Here's an example of a New Year's Resolution:

(Check the underlined section - this is how to use a semi-colon. Two sentences that are very similar can have a semi-colon. You don't have to make a semi-colon in level 1 or 2, but you can if you like!)

     This year, I will drive less, and take the bus more. Driving cars makes a lot of pollution and people don't get exercise in their cars; if I take the bus, I can help the environment. As long as I leave a little earlier, I can get to school on time. Also, I can meet interesting people on the bus, like other students who take the bus to school. I think all people should do something good for the world, and this is my way to do a good thing.
