ELL 3 English
We're finishing up questions from "Thank you Ma'am," and going over integrated vs segregated quotes. Here's our working sample for today:

--------
Last year was the first time I had ever been the new kid at school. For the first four days, I was completely alone. I don’t think I even spoke to a single person. Finally, at lunch on the fifth day, Karen Watson walked past her usual table and sat down right next to me. Even though I was new, I had already figured out who Karen Watson was. She was popular. Pretty soon, all of Karen’s friends were sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends with Karen, but after lunch that day, it seemed like all sorts of people were happy to be my friend. You cannot convince me that Karen did not know what she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a great deal about what it means to be a true leader.
--------

What did Karen do that made other people interested in the narrator?
Segregated
Karen helped the narrator by sitting down next to her. “Karen Watson walked past her usual table and sat down right next to me.” (p. 199)

Integrated

When the narrator was looking for friendship, she became lucky when “Karen Watson walked past her usual table and sat down right next to [her].” (p. 199)

Does the narrator respect Karen?
Segregated

The narrator clearly states that she respects Karen. “I have a great respect for her.”

Integrated

The narrator clearly states that “[she has] a great respect for [Karen].”

More nutrition vocabulary!

ELL 3 Social Studies
I'll be checking your p. 126 questions, then we'll select our disasters for our presentations!

ELL 1/2 Social Studies
We'll go over answers for #8, and our NEWSELA article from yesterday. Some of us might need a bit more time to finish. :)

When we're done with Sharkbucks and all that - we'll move on to another article. Here is the link. Remember to set the difficulty to a level that's right for you.

  1. What makes "Black Panther" different from other Marvel movies?
  2. How has "Black Panther" changed the way Hollywood sees women and African Americans as actors?
  3. What's another movie that changed how Hollywood thinks of female actors?

Monday! :D

Kermit Drinking Tea meme

ELL 1/2 Social Studies
Today we're going over grammar 9. We'll also go back and check out grammar 8, since we had some difficulty with 9 on Thursday. Also - we will go over the answers to our first NEWSELA questions and begin our next article, if there's time! Click here to view the NEWSELA article.
  1. What is another name for Chinese New Year? (English)
  2. What is the old Chinese calendar based on?
  3. What are some of the traditions of Chinese New Year?
  4. What was the last dish for the Chinese New Year dinner? Why?
  5. Why was Chinese New Year not allowed anymore? Why did it return?
The last two paragraphs of the article says that "Chinese New Year is not a religious holiday anymore." Now it's just a vacation for people to "go online, sleep, or watch TV." It also states that younger people don't like "old New Years foods."

Do you agree with these last two paragraphs?
Have you felt that traditional holidays are losing their original purpose? Are they becoming "just a break from work and school"?

ELL 3 Social Studies
We'll be starting our individual projects tomorrow, so today we'll begin the last disaster section in our book. We'll also discuss what is expected for our project and select the disaster we'll present on.

ELL 1/2 Science
Back to nutrition and healthy eating! Today we'll do the next part of our nutrition unit!

ELL 3 English
We're going to talk more about "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes. We'll do those questions, too.

We're going to pick our champion topic today. This is one that has passed our first line of testing - where we pair up and challenge our big supporting points with one another. Then we'll write our paragraph.

ELL 1/2 Science
Today we're moving on to our next unit. This is a bit different than originally planned, but we'll be going over our presentations next Wednesday so please be ready to speak.

ELL3 Social Studies
Today we're going over our grammar assigned for homework - and a homework check. Then we'll do rogue waves for our natural disaster. Start thinking about which disaster you would like to present.

ELL 1/2 Social Studies
Today we're going over the answers to page 20 and 21 assigned for homework. Then we'll finish up this last part on the Land of Canada unit. If there's time I'll even do a little intro to our current events unit!

If we have time, here is our NEWSELA article. Set the reading level to "590L" before you start! Remember - this article uses Fahrenheit, not Celsius to measure temperature. In Fahrenheit, water freezes at 32 degrees.

  1. What kinds of problems can cold weather cause? (at least 5!) - Make room to answer this question as you read the article.
  2. What are some ways people warm up in Michigan?
  3. What is hypothermia?

Almost Friday!

Good day, day everyone!

ELL3 English
Today we finished up The Golden Crane, and worked on Agree/Disagree writing.

The boring way: "I agree/disagree with the idea that..."
  • dogs are great.
  • pets are too much work.
  • homework is fun.
  • movies are better than books.
The interesting way: declare your position as part of your topic sentence, rather than simply agree or disagree with it. For example:
  • I agree with the idea that dogs are great. (boring)
  • Dogs have been loyal and wonderful pets to people for many years. (interesting)
The 2nd sentence here shows the reader that you agree with the statement and it also provides information to support your position.

ELL 1/2 Science
Today we're just doing project work! Exciting!

ELL 3 Social Studies
Today we'll do a little disaster unit work, and some grammar.

ELL 1/2 Social Studes
Today we'll break into groups for grammar. Our peer helper will take one group with one set of grammar, and the rest of us will do some different grammar!

'Tis the 6th of Feb!

Another wonderful day - and some great participation. Social Studies classes have been working very hard on designing their maps, and I have seen some amazing work coming through today. Here's a rundown of what we've done:

ELL 1/2 Social Studies
Maps have made some progress today. Remember - Canada is not an island! Please don't put an ocean where a country should be. No homework today. Tomorrow we may have some time to finish, and we'll do some grammar!

There'll be a quiz on the capital cities, province names, 3 oceans, and Great Lakes on Tuesday next week.

ELL 3 Social Studies
Some maps have completed in this class. Really fantastic work, guys! We should have time to return to grammar work tomorrow.

There'll be a quiz on the capital cities, province names, 3 oceans, and Great Lakes on Tuesday next week.

ELL 1/2 Science
We've finished going over cells. Please study for our quiz on Tuesday next week. You must know how to spell the words, and the definition of the words. Grammar tomorrow!

ELL 3 English
We made some progress on paragraph design today. We should be able to finish paragraph work tomorrow, even though it's a grammar day. I'll be sure to bring in some grammar since it's Wednesday after all!

Happy Monday!

Greetings! Here's our work today:

ELL 1/2 Social Studies
Today we completed a handout during class that helped us learn the names of each province and territory in Canada. Near the end of the class, we started making a map of Canada. Please don't do this map for homework - we'll do this in class so I can make sure you're doing it correctly each step of the way. Here are the steps that we covered in class:

  1. Draw a compass rose.
  2. Colour the lakes, rivers, and oceans blue. Please remember: Canada is not an island.
  3. Label (use capital letters for each of these):
    1. Provinces
    2. Territories
    3. Captial Cities
    4. Great Lakes and Oceans
  4. Colour the provinces and territories. Don't use blue. Please colour darkly and neatly.

ELL 3 Social Studies
Today we worked on the map of Canada. It's the same as the map above! Please make it neat and tidy - it counts and it's for marks!

ELL 1/2 Science
Today we took a look at the organelles of a cell. Here's some helpful reading that will help you understand these organelles. During the class we copied some notes from a presentation and kept them on a handout, "Anatomy of an Animal Cell".

ELL 3 English
Today we took a close look at paragraph writing and worked specifically on topic sentences.

It's Reading Day! So what's reading day?

First of all, we have extended reading time. This means we read for up to 25 minutes. Then it's time to hand in our sharkbucks and earn stamps for reading.

During silent reading, we can fill in our book report form or read. Do this after each book we finish. After we finish silent reading, we'll hand them in and earn stamps on our Reading Day sheet. We can get stamps on Reading Day for the following activities:

  1. Reading Silently During the Week and RD. (1 stamp)
  2. Fill in the Reading Log for the week. (1 stamp)
  3. Completing a Book Report form. (2 stamps)
