Here comes a plethora of 1984 content!

What is Orwellian?

Take a look at these articles. Begin considering what you might approach for an essay topic. Keep in mind that this would be synthesis writing - that is, a response that encompasses multiple texts to respond to a single question. Taking what we've learned from 1984 and other texts allows us to combine what we've learned into new knowledge.
  1. Essay arguing the current validity of 1984 (Kakutani)
  2. Why Nobody Cares The President is Lying (Sykes)
  3. All of the Passages in 1984 that relate to you right now (Temple)
  4. Letter that explains why Orwell wrote 1984 (Orwell)

We're moving towards synthesis writing and TED talks.

Synthesis writing takes place when we connect texts in order to respond to essay questions. If we use 1984 and this source to answer a question like, "Is censorship more harmful or helpful to those in power?" you would be writing a synthesis piece.

To create a synthesis question:

  1. Look at the topics presented in our core text. In this case, 1984. Find one that interests you.
  2. Create a question about this topic. It should be arguable and falsifiable.

Time to revisit essays. First we'll be looking at thesis statements again. Consider these topics - write a thesis statement for each one. Remember we want our thesis statements to be:
  1. Direct responses to the question.
  2. Be provable - and falsifiable. This means it needs to be a statement that requires evidence to support, and it needs to be an argument someone can attempt to refute.
