Happy Fashion Disaster Day!

Hello Wednesday, goodbye Wednesday - here's our work for the day.

English 8: Unless you have specifically spoken to me about the deadline, your interest presentations are due tomorrow. We will start presentations at the beginning of class.

We started work on our level 2 questions. Great group work in making up these questions. Remember - level 2 questions require you to "think and search" - that is, you need to look for the answers in more than one place in the book. Here are the questions we made in class:

1. Why does everyone like Sodapop?
2. Why does Cherry and Marcia accept the greasers but not the other socs?
3. How did Ponyboy’s thinking change throughout chapters 1 - 3?
4. What period does the story take place in?
5. Why does Ponyboy hate Darry?
6. Why are greasers called greasers?

Remember - don't answer the question your group made. That means you need to answer 5 of the 6 questions. Make sure you find at least 2 quotes for each answer. Answers shouldn't be more than 6 sentences each (A small paragraph, or a few sentences will do).

English 11: Great brainstorming today on the elements of The Lottery. Make sure you have a copy of your group work from today. We will use these in order to write our responses tomorrow.

Also, remember that I am available for formative feedback during most lunches, before, and after school. There are sometimes meetings during lunch time, but barring these circumstances, I am available.

English 9 SPECTRUM: Today we checked over our Limericks. Please remember to follow the format that we discussed in class! Here it is:

Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme.
Lines 3 and 4 rhyme.
Lines 1, 2, and 5 have 8 - 10 syllables.
Lines 3 and 4 have 5 - 7 syllables.

We also practiced reading limericks in class. They have a rhythm! If you're still not sure, check out limerick performances on youtube.com. There are plenty of examples of how we read anapestic poetry :)

Homework: Make a nice copy of your limerick on a square piece of paper. Decorate it. Make it pretty. Make it glorious. Here's how I'll mark your limerick presentations:

1. Oral presentation - volume/pronunciation. Did you read it properly?
2. Visual Presentation - images/graphics? colours? detail?

After we finish presenting our limericks on Friday, we'll get back into Identities.

Homework - On Backwards Day!

Happy backwards day! It's a great day for plenty of students to crash into each other with their backwards hoodies on.

English 8:
Today we handed in our gender identity assignments from yesterday. Please make sure you put the correct assignment into your folder! After that, we went over the format we'll use for our double entry journals. We will expand on this as the course progresses.

Homework: Find 2 good quotes, and put them on the left side of the journal. Using the response guide we discussed in class, respond to each quote (at least 2 sentences, not more than 4 sentences).

Your interest project is due on Thursday, October 1. Come prepared to share!

English 9 SPEC:
For Wednesday, we have our character limericks to hand in. These will be considered drafts, and we will make good copies during class time tomorrow.

Also, don't forget to research some debate styles. We need to come to class with some ideas, and be prepared to discuss some specific styles - think Oxford!

English 11:
All done with Greene's Destructors. The quote assignment we had for homework was a bit tricky. This is the nature of author intent. Don't worry, we're going right back into reader responses. Remember - interpreting any kind of text is an ongoing dialogue between the audience and the author. At one end, we have author intent, and at the other, reader response. Often, these two are quite similar, other times, not so much. What matters, is that your evidence supports your interpretation.

Homework: Read Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, and complete your DEJ for tomorrow.
Don't forget a flashlight

Welcome to the labyrinth of education!

Yes blogs make sense. Here's your homework. Here's a sample topic. Here's an essay. Do your thing.

I'll use this blog to post your homework or any other items that might supplement the class. Beware - I teach 4 classes. If you see homework posted for a class other than your own, it's not for you.
