Macbeth Assessments

Welcome to 2019! Let's rock and roll!

English 11
We'll be doing a few soliloquies with Macbeth and a little writing before we move on to the final mini-unit: Apocalypse Now.

Macbeth focuses heavily on person vs self conflicts. Throughout, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth battle with themselves and present paradoxes that embody their turmoil. For our final stretch of Macbeth, we'll be examining soliloquies and scenes where this conflict comes to life. There are two parts to this assessment - a skit and some writing. 

Find some folks in the class, and make a selection from the list below:

  9. ( 3 ) Act 5 scene 1: Lady Macbeth is clearly unwell. Her guilt and shame have overwhelmed her sanity. The doctor and Gentlewoman look upon her with pity, concern, and confusion. Angelina, Christy, and Kitty.
  10. ( 3 ) Act 5 scene 3: Macbeth is enraged at the incoming English army. He demands to be made ready for war and scoffs at news of Lady Macbeth's illness. 
  11. ( 2 or 3) Act 5 scene 5: Macbeth learns that Lady Macbeth has died. Felix Andy
  12. ( 3 ) Act 5 scene 7 and 8: Macbeth is finally slain by Macduff after learning that Macduff was born by a caesarean section. 
To be successful for this skit, do the following:
  • Perform the skit.
  • Decide on several props to help with understanding what the scene is about.
  • Show your understanding of the scene through how you deliver your lines and interact with the other characters.
  • You may edit some content out of the scene - up to 20%, but don't cut something that may utterly change the meaning and purpose of the scene.
  • (bonus) Memorize your lines.
  • (bonus) Dress up
After we have delivered our scenes, we'll be doing some writing. I'll provide the class with a list of choices based on the scenes above. Make a selection, and write an extended response, answering the question using Shakespeare quotation standards to supply evidence. This must be done within a single class. 
  • Integration is not expected for quoting Shakespeare.
  • Quotes are expected.
  • Explain the quotes.
  • The first sentence should be your thesis statement - an immediate response to the question you have chosen to answer.
